Explanation of answer: Step 1: To answer this question we must find out the total mass (in grams) of tuna contained in 4 large tins. Then we need to work out the minimum number of smaller tins required to give at least the same combined mass of tuna. Step 2: To find out the total mass of tuna Athena usually donates, we need to calculate the combined mass contained in 4 larger tins. 4 x 425 can be broken down to 4 x 400 = 1,600 grams and 4 x 25 = 100 grams. 1,600 + 100= 1,700 grams of tuna. Step 3: Now we need to find the minimum number of smaller tins required to give at least the same total mass of tuna. To get an estimate of this number, we can round the 95 gram tins to 100 grams.. We divide the 1,700 grams required by 100 grams to give us an estimate of 17 tins. But as we know, the smaller tins contain only 95 grams, which is 5 grams less per tin. If Athena only buys 17 smaller tins, the total mass of tuna will be short by5 x 17 = (10 x 17) ÷ 2 = 170 ÷ 2 = 85 grams of the amount she usually donates. This means she needs to buy one more 95 gram tin, bringing the total purchase to 18 tins.
